My learning experience regarding magazine conventions included learning about the more in depth elements of magazines. I found it fascinating how each convention had a purpose towards selling to its demographic.
I made my magazine part of the fashion and self-care genre, I conveyed this through my cover image and article being me wearing a dress and having the featured article related to the dress. By having the dress as the main center of attention I brought a focus to the piece of clothing signifying that this was a magazine about clothing.
Another convention I used was the font types and color, I used bold attention grabbing fonts that had similar styles to differ each coverline or to emphasize on certain words. I used a classic cursive-esque font for the masthead to mimic high fashion magazines to make it appealing to fans of that particular demographic.
The only challenge I had was experimenting with the font colors, when I researched examples I discovered that most magazine covers had a plethora of font colors that suited each coverline or puff. I attempted that within my cover but then discovered that it looked too complex and messy. The solution I found was to make all the font colors a cohesive shade of pink for a more professional and cleaner design.
Overall my learning experience was fruitful, I was able to pick on the interface of Indesign quickly to make my cover very easy to complete and I will make sure to use this skill set throughout my portfolio by experimenting with specific elements and make the best judgement to deliver the goal of using the magazine conventions to appeal to the audience.
