The genres I am considering are fashion, food, and entertainment. The conventions and stylistic tools that are used in each of these types vary to suit the message each of them is sending.
FASIHION
For fashion, color and typography specifically in the Vogue magazine of the masthead are bold but almost blank. The coloring of it is usually black or white, which is to provide contrast to the typically grand cover image.
As a fashion magazine, one the main purposes are to highlight unique styles, by having the masthead colored black, is working to show the image rather than beg for attention from the reader.
The typography is made to exude elegance and have a classy aura around words, to showcase the professionalism of what they are informing the readers. Overall, the conventions of fashion magazines are bold, impactful, but plain.
FOOD
For the food genre, typography is much more versatile. Within a cover page you can see a multitude of different fonts and color schemes being used.
The fonts vary for each coverline. I believe this is because the actual information for food magazines vary so much that the conventions don’t work to exude one cohesive unit but to highlight the individual elements in those magazines.
But the coloring mostly has warm tones shown. Therefore, the color and fonts do work together to bring a cozy and inviting experience to the reader as a way to represent the pleasure that food brings to humans.
Finally, within the entertainment genre, the coloring is cohesive to match that of the masthead, and the typography is huge and bold to tie readers in.
The cover image is usually the celebrity being highlighted in the article and they are placed so huge that it covers the masthead, the purpose of this is to show readers that focus of this individual and what they have to say.
